What could be more important than the health and development of your child? At Lutheran Children's Hospital, we know that children are not just small adults. Kids have their own emotional and physical needs and should be treated with respect for the very special people they are.
Over the years, Lutheran Hospital has earned a reputation for its commitment to this philosophy of dealing with the healthcare needs of children. We believe that the needs of ill and injured children are unique and should be addressed in a manner specifically tailored to children. Lutheran's passion for providing superior healthcare for children has been bolstered by the development of the Lutheran Children's Hospital. Lutheran Children's Hospital was created to further enhance the healthcare services provided to children in northeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio. Children and families who once traveled for hours for necessary treatment can now be treated much closer to home.
The Children's Hospital offers care for children in an environment filled with imagination and color. The tree house elevator and specially decorated hallways, rooms and waiting areas invite children and their families to be distracted from the often unpleasant purpose of their visit. Kids tend to notice things like the decorations, the kid-height nurses-station, playrooms, video games, movies, toys, books and friendly people. But that's what kids should notice—a fun, engaging environment where they feel safe and empowered.
Designed for Children
Lutheran Children's Hospital is designed to meet the unique needs of children, whether for a minor illness, a serious disease or a life-threatening emergency. Each child is treated with specialized and compassionate care in a safe and nurturing environment. Lutheran helps children feel comfortable by providing a child-friendly atmosphere, which includes a playroom in pediatrics and specially decorated rooms and hallways.
Lutheran Children's Hospital offers advanced medical and surgical care for children and a staff trained and experienced in pediatric care. Outlying hospitals often transfer young patients to Lutheran because of our expertise with children. Lutheran Hospital is located off I-69 at exit 102, providing convenient access to advanced care.
A Professional Staff
Our medical staff includes the area's only pediatric intensive care specialist, who has extensive training and expertise in pediatric critical care. Lutheran has five full-time neonatologists who care for ill and premature infants. Other pediatric specialists support Lutheran Children's Hospital, including, but not limited to, a surgeon, a nephrologist, hematologists/oncologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, an endocrinologist, a gastroenterologist, an urologist, pulmonologists, a cardiologist and plastic surgeons. The nursing and support staff are specially trained to meet the medical, developmental and emotional needs of the infant or child. All nursing staff have completed Pediatric Advanced Life Support training or the Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
A family-centered Approach to Pediatric Healthcare
In addition to providing stellar healthcare for children, Lutheran Children's Hospital provides support to the family and strives to involve the family as much as possible in the child's care. This is important because:
- Children look to their parents for security and comfort.
- Parents are most familiar with their child's habits and needs.
- Maintaining home-like habits makes hospitalization less stressful.
Our philosophy of care encourages family involvement. We want the family to share with the staff their needs and desire to participate in the child's care. We also encourage parents to ask staff members to explain procedures they do not understand or how specific equipment works.
We know that hospitalization can be a stressful time—especially when it involves a child. But we're here to help by providing high-quality medical care and emotional support.
