Conscious Sedation Program

Sometimes children must undergo tests or procedures such as MRI or CT scans that require the child to be still for a long period of time, something that is difficult for children to do. For these children, sedation may be necessary in order to complete the testing or procedure.

In response to this need, Lutheran Children's Hospital offers a pediatric conscious sedation team. The team consists of physicians proficient in the use of sedation medications, pediatric nurses and child-life specialists. The team works with each child and family to determine the least invasive method for completing the test/procedure. Conscious sedation methods can range from distraction therapy (toys and games) to intravenous sedation. All methods are offered in a kid-friendly setting.

The team will coordinate the process, including instructing the family prior to the test and graining prior authorization, once a referral is received from the child's physician.
